About Writers’ Forum, Imphal
Preserving the Literary Heritage of Manipur
Founded on 3 September 1988, the Writers’ Forum, Imphal emerged from a collective concern among writers and literary enthusiasts regarding the growing challenges faced by Manipuri literature, particularly in the field of publication. At a time when many talented writers struggled to publish their works due to financial and infrastructural limitations, a group of committed literary figures came together with a shared vision to create a platform dedicated to nurturing literature, culture, and creative expression.
Manipuri literature possesses a rich and ancient tradition, yet for decades much of its literary wealth remained relatively unknown outside the region. The late arrival of modern printing technology and the lack of publishing opportunities created significant barriers for writers. Many authors were compelled to publish their own works at personal financial loss, while numerous manuscripts remained unpublished. It was under these circumstances that the idea of forming a literary organization dedicated to publication and literary development took shape.
The foundation meeting of the Forum was chaired by eminent writer Km. T. Thoibi Devi and attended by fifteen writers who unanimously resolved to establish the Writers’ Forum, Imphal. The organization was built upon the belief that literature serves not only as creative expression but also as a vital force for cultural preservation, intellectual growth, and social harmony.
Over the years, the Forum has evolved into one of the leading literary and cultural organizations in Manipur. Recognized by the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, the organization has consistently worked toward strengthening Manipuri literature through publication, translation, research, literary exchange, seminars, workshops, festivals, and cultural initiatives.
The Writers’ Forum, Imphal has published around 260 books covering poetry, fiction, drama, literary criticism, translation, children’s literature, and cultural studies. Many of these publications have received prestigious recognitions from the Sahitya Akademi and other leading literary institutions.
One of the Forum’s most significant contributions is the publication of its quarterly literary journal, Sahityagi Pao, launched in 1990. Widely regarded as an important literary chronicle of Manipuri literature, the journal documents literary developments, essays, poetry, short stories, seminars, workshops, and important cultural events. The journal carries ISSN 2278-9006 and is recognized as a peer-reviewed academic journal in Manipuri language.
Beyond publications, the Forum actively organizes literary festivals, translation workshops, seminars, interaction programmes, poetry readings, study circles, and cultural events that bring together writers, scholars, translators, artists, and researchers from different communities and regions.
Guided by the vision that literature transcends boundaries and unites people through understanding and shared humanity, the Writers’ Forum, Imphal continues its journey with dedication toward preserving the literary soul of Manipur while creating meaningful cultural connections across generations.
