The Visionaries Behind Writers’ Forum, Imphal

The Writers’ Forum, Imphal was established through the collective vision and dedication of writers, scholars, and literary enthusiasts committed to strengthening Manipuri literature and publishing.

Foundation of the Forum

The foundation meeting of Writers’ Forum, Imphal was held on 3 September 1988 under the chairmanship of renowned writer Km. T. Thoibi Devi. The gathering brought together literary personalities who shared a common concern regarding the challenges faced by Manipuri writers, particularly the lack of publishing opportunities and institutional support for literary activities. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

At a time when many writers struggled to publish their works due to limited resources and financial constraints, the founding members resolved to establish an organization dedicated to literary promotion, publication, cultural preservation, and creative expression. Their vision laid the foundation for what would become one of Manipur’s most respected literary institutions.

A Lasting Legacy

Through their collective vision and determination, the founding members transformed a shared concern into a vibrant literary movement. Their efforts eventually led to the formal registration of Writers’ Forum, Imphal in 1990 and the expansion of its literary activities, publications, seminars, workshops, translation initiatives, and cultural programmes.

Today, the organization continues to uphold the ideals of its founders by promoting literary excellence, supporting writers, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering meaningful literary engagement across generations.

“The foundation of every literary movement begins with individuals who believe in the enduring power of words, culture, and collective creativity.”
